WHITFIELD "Reading on My Knees"

Words Worth Thinking About

George Whitefield was a prominent Anglican preacher and evangelist during the 18th century. Born in Gloucester, England in 1714, Whitefield was educated at Oxford and became a minister in the Church of England. He was a key figure in the Great Awakening, a religious revival that swept through the American colonies and Britain in the 1730s and 1740s.

Whitefield was known for his powerful preaching style and his ability to draw large crowds. He traveled extensively throughout Britain and America, preaching to thousands of people in open fields and public squares. He also founded the Bethesda Orphanage in Georgia, which became a model for other charitable institutions.

Despite facing criticism from some within the Church of England, Whitefield remained committed to his evangelical message and continued to preach until his death in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1770. He is remembered as one of the most influential preachers of his time, and his legacy continues to inspire Christians around the world.

"I began to read the Holy Scriptures upon my knees, laying aside all other books, and praying over, if possible, every line and word. This proved meat indeed and drink indeed to my soul. I daily received fresh life, light, and power from above. I go more true knowledge from reading the book of God in one month than I could ever have acquired from all the writings of men."
