The Foundations of America

Words Worth Thinking About

Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States, wrote a letter in 1917 that should resonate with us today.

“The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.”

Calvin Coolidge

As Governor of Massachusetts, Coolidge wrote this in response to a request for a Thanksgiving Proclamation. He believed the Bible was more than just a personal guide — it was also the cornerstone of American society.

Principles like justice, charity, and humility, he argued, were essential to the stability of American institutions.

Today, do Americans universally embrace Biblical teachings?

The question itself challenges us to reflect. If faith in Biblical principles fade, what will replace it? And what will the result be to our nation?

What do you think? Are Biblical values still our foundation or are we trying to build on a different foundation?
