Rule Number One

Words Worth Thinking About

Let’s admit it: we all follow rules.

It might be an organization we work for.

I remember when I was in the Army, they told me when I would get up, when I would take a shower, how I would make my bed, when I would eat, when I would go to bed, when I would get a haircut and how that haircut would look, just to name a few of the rules.

They had rules for just about everything, and those rules better be obeyed or else.

Now after I left the Army, that wasn’t the end of rules in my life.

RULES, RULES, RULES

There were rules at the places I worked, rules at the schools I attended, rules in the social groups I belonged to, rules I followed that I believed were important moral issues, rules about how fast I could drive, and even rules I made up for myself — what I should eat, when I should exercise, how I should relate to people.

Rules. Rules. Rules.

Lots of rules.

A VERY BIG QUESTION

With so many rules directing our lives—rules from institutions, society, and even ourselves—how do we know which ones matter most?

About two thousand years ago, a Jewish man posed a question to Jesus.

He asked, “What is the most important commandment?”

That’s just another way of asking, “What’s the most important rule?”

Jesus’ answer applies to us today.

“… You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”

Matthew 22:37-38 (ESV)

Think about it.

The most important rule in life is to love God.

How are you doing at living out that rule?

It’s an important question.
