Episode 1: You only get one shot

I hate to break this to you, but … you only get one shot at life.

There are no do-overs.

No next times.

Just this life.  

The one you’re living right now.

That’s all you get.

Now if you’re like me, you want that one shot at life to be a good one.

I was thinking it would really help if we had a manual on how to do this life thing.

Well, the fact is … we do.

God -- the Creator of the Universe God -- has given us a manual on how to live life well.

That manual is called the Bible.

The Big Picture

In the book of Psalms it says:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

In this podcast, we’ll look at some of those words that God that has given us on how to live life well.

Now in the following episodes we will look at some very specific items, but in this first episode I thought it would be good to see the big picture.

We get that big picture from Jesus’ answer to a question from one of the religious leaders of his day. The man asked Jesus, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

Not a bad question.

Jesus answered,

“… you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:30-32 (ESV)

That is the big picture, an overview on how to live life well.

Love God and love others.

In future episodes we will work through some very specific teachings God gives us about things like anger, gossip, pride, gentleness, forgiveness … things that will help us make this one shot we have at life worthwhile.

But always keep the big picture in front of you — love God and love others.

Don’t make the mistake of separating your life into the “secular” and the “sacred.” This is what I do in church. this is what I do when I’m hanging around with my friends.

Loving God and loving others is to be part of every aspect of your life. At work. At home. Interacting with friends. Interacting with strangers. Even on the internet.

Remember, you only get one shot.
