You probably know people who say all the “right things” but whose lives demonstrate something very different than what they say.
We give those people — “them” — a number of names: phony, hypocrite, two-faced, pretender … to name just a few. Many of those names are less-than-kind.
But whatever you call “them”, you have to admit it’s a pretty common human condition. People have been talking a game they don’t live for a long time.
It’s usually easy to pick “them” out.
But it seems a bit more difficult for most of us when we realize that “them” just might be us.
The Lighthouse
For those of you who are Christians, I would like you to look at yourself.
Do you live the life that you say you believe?
Or are they just words?
Dwight L. Moody, the 19th century American evangelist and preacher gave a good analogy of the situation.
"It is a great deal better to live a holy life than to talk about it. Lighthouses do not ring bells and fire cannons to call attention to their shining—they just shine."
Dwight L. Moody
Consider the purpose of a lighthouse. It exists to keep ships from crashing and sinking in dangerous waters. It’s designed to save lives.
They do that by just shining.
That’s it!
Just shining.
If you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God has placed you as a lighthouse to those around you.
You have a job.
Just shine.
Don’t Just Talk a Good Game
God doesn’t want you to just talk a good game, becoming one of “them.”
God wants you to live life well.
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Matthew 5:16 (ESV)
As you go through your day today, choose to be like a lighthouse and shine — not so that you will be praised, but that the people who watch you will see how great God is and give glory to Him.
Before I go, I’d like to share a blessing with you from the Old Testament.
“May the Lord bless and protect you; may the Lord’s face radiate with joy because of you; may he be gracious to you, show you his favor, and give you his peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 (The Living Bible)
Until next time … be the reason someone smiles today
