Giving to the Needy

Words Worth Thinking About

The Bible is filled with what I call “Tips from God” on how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Among these teachings are many that emphasize the importance of helping those in need. However, in one particular teaching, Jesus shifts the focus from merely what you do to how you do it—from your actions to your attitude. It's not enough to simply help others; the spirit in which you do so matters profoundly.

Here’s what Jesus says”

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Matthew 6:1-4 (ESV)

The message here is simple yet profound: you are called to help others in a way that brings glory to God, not yourself. Jesus warns us against seeking recognition or applause for our acts of kindness. When our giving is done quietly, without fanfare, it is God who sees and rewards.

At the heart of this teaching is a challenge to examine our motives. Are we helping others to be admired or because it aligns with the heart of God? The answer determines whether our actions are truly righteous or merely self-serving.

In a world that often values public recognition, Jesus’ words are a powerful reminder that real generosity comes from a place of humility. True reward is not found in the applause of others, but in knowing that God sees and is pleased.
